Maria Montessori
Dr. Maria Montessori
Dr. Maria Montessori was an Italian physician and educator who revolutionized the way children learn. She developed a unique approach to education that focused on the individual needs of each child, allowing them to learn at their own pace and in their own way. Her methods have been adopted by schools around the world and are still used today.
Dr. Montessori believed that children should be given freedom within a structured environment to explore and discover themselves. She also believed that children should be encouraged to think for themselves and develop their own ideas, rather than simply being taught what to think. Her methods included hands-on activities, such as puzzles and manipulatives, as well as language development activities like reading and writing.
Dr. Montessori's approach has been praised for its ability to foster creativity, independence, self-discipline, and problem-solving skills in children. It has also been credited with helping children develop a sense of responsibility for their own learning and behavior. Additionally, her methods have been found to be effective in helping children with special needs or learning disabilities reach their full potential.
Today, Dr. Montessori's methods continue to be used in schools worldwide and in homeschooling environments. Her legacy lives on through her work which continues to inspire educators everywhere who strive to create an environment where all children can reach their full potential regardless of ability or background.
Dr. Maria Montessori was an Italian physician, educator, and innovator who developed the Montessori Method of education. Her philosophy of education focused on the development of the whole child, emphasizing self-directed activity and learning through hands-on experiences. She believed that children should be allowed to explore their environment and learn at their own pace. Her approach to education has been adopted by many schools around the world and continues to be an influential force in modern education.
Dr. Maria Montessori started to apply her teaching approach to students who have special learning needs, she believes that each child can learn in his own way so she used a different technique which is deep observation in which she could exactly determine their main needs and highlight them as a starting point for her to start a teaching plan.
For sure she observed that not all students have the same needs during the same stage, every student has his own path in which they may be some similarities between the needs for each age stage but even though they don’t come in a specific sequence.
This was the main key for Dr. Maria Montessori to put the theory for the sensitive periods, and to design the class to include students of different ages to allow the sensitive periods to appear separately for each student during this age stage.
Her second main key is that all kids must not follow the same teaching plan every day, she started to put individual progress plans for each student separately according to his own needs and abilities. But how could the teacher manage to do this for a full classroom? This was the creation of designing the Montessori system that we are going to introduce it.
In Montessori classroom we distribute students according to their ages into stages:
1st stage from 0-3 years old
2nd stage from 3-6 years old
3rd stage from 6-9 years old
And so on until the students reach the age of 18 years old.
Let’s take the 2nd stage as an example: we find that the Montessori classroom will include students whose ages are different but still between 3 to 6 years old. This will allow the exchange of experiences between kids (as a 6-year-old student can give some academic experience to a 4-year-old one, on the other side the 4-year-old student can transfer some social skills to an elder student).
The learning sections in Montessori class are (practical life, sensorial, language, science, and geography sections) on a student may cover all the math concepts for this stage by the age of 4 years in which he still works on his language targets, while another kid will exceed the expected target for science before he accomplishes half the math targets.
Students improve at an individual pace…
When I give the student the freedom to learn what he is ready for now, he will learn it fast….
